Jose Mangual- Mai Kinshasa ( Turnstyle records)

Jose Mangual- Mai Kinshasa ( Turnstyle records)

Latin jazz legend, José Mangual, known as “Buyú”, was born on 18 March, 1924 in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico. Mangual demonstarted a love of music early in his youth, listening to mostly Cuban music: rumbas, guarachas, and son montunos. From that music he took an interest in playing the bongos and taught himself to play on makeshift instruments made from tin cans. This track is from 77' yet the build up sounds like something from the late 60's. The way the heat drops about 30 seconds in is straight fire. When the pace starts picking up it goes into blast mode. I always had the album and loved the diversity of styles being played. Finding this 45 of my favourite track was the icing on the cake. Long live this legend who died in 1998 leaving a great legacy in the world of Puerto Rican music. Mangual performed with artists and orchestras such as Eddie Palmieri, Chico O’Farrill, Cal Tjader, the Count Basie Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Dexter Gordon, Cachao, Ray Charles, Tito Rodriguez and Tito Puente. -Dj Aware

Harry Ray- Ride Your Pony Girl (All Platinum Records)

Harry Ray- Ride Your Pony Girl (All Platinum Records)

Harry Milton Ray was born on 15 December 1946 in Longbranch, New Jersey, died 1 October 1992, Bound Brook, New Jersey. He played with the Moments and Ray, Goodman & Brown. This track right here is a straight Slapper! Just the way it comes in and drops into the vocals...Priceless. The continuous melody ripping through like a sweet lady's touch. Saucy soulful funk with a touch of boogie all packaged in one slapper of a track. On the coldest day this one brings the heat in all ways..This track stands along side with my favorite Moments cut " I Won't Do Anything".. -Dj Aware-

Abdul Wadud - Cello

Liner notes:
KAZUKO SHIRAISHI is a cult figure to the young people of Japan, Her haunting, lyrical creations, read to the backgrounds of jazz in Tokyo's Shinjuku nighclub district, established her as "Shinjuku's Queen of Poets."
Hers is the most outstanding voice of her generation in Japan and elsewhere in the world. In the U.S., Kazuko has worked very closely with Kenneth Rexroth, whom she considers the godfather of poetry reading with jazz.
Kazuko has been awarded Japan's top cultural prize for poetry and has been in the forfront of cultural events in Japan. She has been one of the key forces in Japanese creative writing and has appeared at many cultural seminars in the United Stated and Europe. Her poems continue in the tradition of explicit erotic urgency of famous Japanese poets such as Onomo Komachi and Yosano Akiko.
Kazuko Shiraishi has written more than ten books of poetry, many articles and short stories. Her most recent work, issued by New Directions, is "Seasons of Sacred Lust: The Selected Poems of Kazuko Shiraishi.""
On this recording Kazuko is accompanied by a select group of musicians, including Abdul Wadud, Buster Williams, Andrei Strobert and featuring SAM RIVERS about whom Robert Palmer wrote in Rolling Stone: "It seems indisputable that he will go down in history as one of the great jazzmen of the sixties and seventies, but he is already looking ahead."
